Papanui High School is a BYOD school. All students are expected to bring a device to support their learning. A student-owned, internet-capable device is an essential tool, giving students instant access to resources and enabling them to extend, communicate, and share their learning in ways that prepare them for the future. Students will experience technology integrated into their curriculum through platforms like Google Classroom and Education Perfect. With NCEA assessments increasingly moving online, many students will also require their device for end-of-year exams. While there remains a place for books, paper, and pens, the school’s stationery requirements have been significantly reduced.
What Device Should You Bring?
We recommend a Chromebook or laptop, but you may choose any device provided it:
- Has a keyboard.
- Holds a charge for at least six hours.
- Connects to the internet.
- Has the latest version of Google Chrome installed.
Please note: A phone is not an approved learning device. iPads and tablets are not recommended.
Device Purchase Options
- We recommend Cyclone BYOD. However, stores such as PB Tech, Harvey Norman, Noel Leeming, and Warehouse Stationery often have sales on suitable devices.
- Refurbished Chromebooks or second-hand laptops are acceptable, provided they meet the specifications above.
For families on a low income or receiving a benefit, Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) may be able to help with school-related costs.
Cyber Safety and Digital Citizenship
All Year 9 students will participate in a programme on internet safety and responsible online behaviour. This learning aligns with our school values and equips students to navigate the online world safely.
The school’s internet network is monitored and filtered by N4L, providing a secure online environment.
Device Care and Security
To ensure the longevity and security of devices, students should follow these guidelines:
- Use a protective case or bag for the device.
- Avoid placing heavy items, like books, on top of the device in school bags.
- Never lift the device by the screen, as it can damage the hinges.
- Keep devices secure and never leave them unattended.
- Personalise devices with labels or engravings to identify ownership.
The security of a student-owned device is the responsibility of the student.
Warranty and Insurance
- Most devices come with a one-year warranty, with options to extend to three years. Warranty coverage typically includes hardware issues not caused by misuse.
- Check your home contents insurance policy to ensure it covers theft or damage to your student’s device. The owner is responsible for any insurance coverage.
By following these guidelines, students will be well-prepared to make the most of their learning experience at Papanui High School. Thank you for supporting our BYOD programme and helping your student succeed in an increasingly digital world.
