Principal's Weekly Review 26th May 2023

Kia ora,

This week has been very much a ‘business as usual’ teaching and learning week, complemented by some outstanding and positive co-curricular opportunities.

Last Friday our team of 4 students (Josh Rae, Oliver Fall, Elisabeth Cox, and Chloe Morrison Clarke) won the South Island Senior Ethics Olympiad after answering how best to respond to 8 contemporary ethical dilemmas. This is an outstanding achievement, and our students should feel incredibly proud of what they have achieved, as we are of them.  We look forward to receiving their gold medals so we can present them formally at an assembly.  Due to the success they have been invited to compete in the International Ethics Olympiad in July.

The school’s Jazz Ensemble performed on Saturday at Christchurch Boys’ High as part of the Ōtautahi Jazz Spectacular, and thoroughly wowed the audience (refer to the article on page 2).

On Thursday fifteen students joined approximately 800 others from around Canterbury to attend the ISport Foundation conference at the Christchurch Town Hall (refer to the article on Page 2).

These examples above are some of the ways in which our students have been positively engaging themselves out in the community.  I’d also like to thank and acknowledge the staff who have been supporting them.

BUILDING UPDATE

Great progress has been made on Westhub, with all the steel framing in place, first floor now in place, and if you look closely at the picture you will see the wooden internal framing starting to be put in place.  Next week it is expected that the foundation will be poured for Easthub.

There are only three weeks until this year’s major production of ‘Chicago’.  Events like school productions provide a range of opportunities for student involvement to display their specific set of skills that help contribute to the event, For example there are approximately 150 students involved, with a cast of 50, 30 Crew members, 15 band members, set builders and catering students.

Please note:  The production runs 13 - 16 June, and Friday 16th is almost already a sell out.  Tickets are available through the school’s website https://www.papanui.school.nz/etickets

Ngā mihi
