125th Suffrage Celebration

On Thursday 13 September, a group of 18 Papanui High School students along with Mrs Warne and Mr Holland, were given the amazing opportunity to attend the Celebration of the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand. The event, held at the Isaac Theatre Royal, featured inspiring speeches from Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Honorary Doctor Megan Woods, and keynote speaker, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The celebration reflected greatly on the significance of our nation becoming the first in the world to gain the women's right to vote.  The capturing words of the Prime Minister inspired women and men of all ages, encouraging audience members to stay true to themselves, and stand up for what they believe in, especially focussing on gaining real equality, such as pay equity which is a commonly discussed issue in New Zealand, and was well addressed. Our Head Girl Nina Sales, was one of the 19 selected students who asked the Prime Minister a question regarding female leadership. The group left feeling inspired and empowered, having faith that persistence and hard-work could continue propelling New Zealand into equality; making significant impacts in another 125 years.
