Cricket @ PHS
Cricket has not been played at Papanui by a Papanui High team for some time now, but with a hit out against Rolleston College on Tuesday we changed all that. No pink ball, no white ball, just an old fashioned red ball game. Papanui won the toss and elected to bat first on a warm-ish afternoon - the grass was deceptively longer than most normal outfields, as the mower was making adjustments getting ready for winter sport, and softer conditions for the oval code. Boundaries were very difficult to score, but the boys managed some lusty blows that put some sprinters on the running track in danger. No Tui's catch a million here, and some classrooms were closer than what is desirable. Thankfully there were no injuries to the spectators, or windows broken.
The game - we scored 83 runs off our 15 overs, only going out 5 times (a wicket was minus five runs) in our 5 partnerships of 3 overs. Cam was our significant batter, as he managed to head butt a short pitched 'Wagner' type delivery and had to retire hurt/shaken up. Rolleston managed to score 76 in reply, which was a good turn around after their first two batters sent a number of balls over the boundary for a maximum 6 scored - with the total standing at 52 after 6 overs. The difference was the number of wickets we took, roughly 15 - spread around a number of ways to get out - caught, bowled, and run out. The age old cliche - Cricket was the winner - and we are looking forward to a return game against them at their fields before the end of the Term. A huge thanks to Mrs Hill for organising the game.
