On Wednesday the 26th of September an inaugural event took place, aptly named “Acoustic Night”. This was a collaboration between the University of Canterbury's Music School, and the Papanui High School Music Department. The newly refurbished Arts Centre of Christchurch was the venue, and we made the most of the beautiful natural acoustics of the room. Twenty-six students performed acoustic songs of their own choice. This allowed for a great variety of genres of music including Classical, Pop, Jazz, Cuban, and Show music. With stripped back accompaniment the vocals were the focus of the night. For many of these students it was their first performance and their efforts were enjoyed by a packed house in a lovely, dedicated recital space.
The University of Canterbury Music School performance contribution featured an original and very avant-garde composition from one of their 1st year Violin students. It was a fantastic night with many different music students getting to show their talents. The feedback has been great and the University staff commented on how advanced and special some of our vocalists were. A big thank-you to Ms Jane Herman for organising this beautiful event, and to all the PHS Music Department staff, and at the UC School of Music for making it such a successful event.
