Clubs and Groups
Q Crew
Q Crew is a community-based, student led group that provides a safe and accepting place for LGBT+ students throughout our school. We meet every week and have open conversations about the community and take the opportunity to make some new friends or be able to recognise some familiar faces from around the school. All students need to do is be an ally or a part of the LGBT+ community, email their teacher about Q Crew and they will forward the student to our wonderful group.
Maker Club
Papanui High School we have a Maker Club for students interested in programming and making anything to do with digital technology. This group is for everyone, whether you are a beginner and never coded, just played in Scratch, already programming in one or more languages, want to try a raspberry pi or micro:bit, or learn how to make a website.
We meet once a week currently at lunchtime on a Wednesday in P3.
Anyone is welcome anytime. For any questions see Mrs Gallop in the Commerce office or email [email protected]
PhilSoc
PhilSoc was established in 2013 as an after school activity for students who enjoy asking the 'big questions'. Headed by Jo Dwan, Rob Fuller, Liam Campfens, and Rob Adams, PhilSoc meets after school on Thursdays, once a fortnight. At each session, one of the leading teachers, students, and, at times, guest speakers, deliver a presentation encouraging students to critically consider topics from both their own society and the wider world. Each presentation is followed by group discussion where students can share their thoughts on issues that arise. Some examples of the many topics that have been examined include free speech, sex and gender, beauty, justice, animal rights, aliens, and the existence of God. Students who have attended PhilSoc thoroughly enjoy the discussion and higher order thinking that is encouraged. For those students looking to take this opportunity to the next level, they are able to present as part of their NCEA speaking assessments and gain level 1, 2, or 3 credits. PhilSoc is completely voluntary and all students, teachers, and others from outside of the school are welcome to attend. PhilSoc: the Papanui High School society for the enlightened and open-minded!
If you’re interested in attending PhilSoc, please email Rob Adams at [email protected]
